Western Victoria’s Green Power Hub

March 15, 2018

The ambition for the Bulgana Green Power Hub, situated roughly 300km West of Melbourne, is to develop an environmental, economical and sustainable sound wind and storage facility which will dramatically improve the states energy security. Therefore reducing power prices for the consumer and facilitating greater uptake of renewable energy. Using the latest proven battery technology, the facility will be one of the first and largest grid-scale batteries currently operating throughout the world.

The Power Hub will generate around 750,000 MWh of clean, renewable electricity into the national power grid each year, therefore significantly contributing to Australia’s greenhouse gas emission curtailment. These reductions in greenhouse emissions are comparable to taking either 230,000 cars off the road or planting 1.2 million trees and generating enough electricity to power an estimated 130,000 homes. The Bulgana Green Power Hub site comprises approximately 7500 hectares of private land and will consist of up to 56 turbines, with the option to increase the number of turbines in years to come.

Bulgana was identified as having significant renewable power potential in 2010. The factors underlying this assessment were:

  • Availability of an abundant wind resource
  • Proximity to an existing transmission line
  • High local electricity load with potential for growth
  • Sparse local population density
  • Landholders supportive of hosting wind turbines on their property
  • Low environmental or agricultural impact

The Bulgana Green Power Hub site comprises approximately 7500 hectares of private freehold land and will consist of up to 56 turbines.
